Description of the Pierce College
Pierce College belongs to the largest education facilities in Washington State. International students have the opportunity to receive a great American education. Here students may study two years and receive an Associates degree or transfer afterwards to an American university. Pierce College places particular focus on five core areas: critical thinking and problem solving, effective communication, information competence, multi-culturalism, and responsibility. Besides academics, there are many student clubs and activities, such as dance evenings, excursions, movie evenings, and much more. They are organized on both campuses by a student team. The International Student Club is made up of local and international members, and twice a month they meet to simply have fun. Anybody can be a part of the organization, where frequent excursions are planned, and where one will play games, and attend sports events and film evenings. "Culture Day", that takes place every quarter, is also organized by the club.

Pierce College has two locations: Fort Steilacoom, and the Puyallup campus. Fort Steilacoom lies in Lakewood, which is 56 hectares in size, and lies 10 miles southwest from Tacoma. The campus lies directly next to Fort Steilacoom Park on Waughhop Lake. From here, Puget Sound is only four miles away. The Puyallup campus is 34 hectares in size and 10 miles southeast of Tacoma. Here, the large Yearly Market takes place in Washington. From both campuses, one has a view of Mount Rainier. The campuses themselves are about 30 minutes from each other.

Lakewood has 60,000 inhabitants and lies in Pierce County in Washington. American Promise, a trust for children and youths, has voted the city one of the best 100 places for young people. There are many lakes such as the American Lake, Lake Steilacoom, Gravelly Lake, Lake Louise and Waughop Lake within the borders of the city. Many little creeks flow through the region, some of them into the near Puget Sound. The beautiful Thornewood Castle Bed & Breakfast from 1920 is located on the American Lake; in this house, people can look at more than 100 glass works from the 16th century. The Lakewold Gardens on Gravelly Lake are another beautiful place where one finds many interesting kinds of trees, bushes and shrubs. In 1849, the American Army came to Lakewood to avoid an Indian uprising. At this time, the post Fort Steilacoom developed from a farm. Four remaining cottages with a museum remind people of that. Furthermore, there are many parks in Lakewood such as the Kiwanis Park with a skating rink, the Harry Todd Community Park with tennis courts and the Fort Steilacoom Park with soccer fields. The weather is usually rather convenient: Summers have temperatures between 21 °C and 26 °C and a slight breeze which is perfect for sailing or canoeing, and winters have an average temperature of 7 °C. There is hardly any snowfall, but the surrounding mountains offer many ski resorts.

 Private apartments are only recommended to students staying longer than six months. The monthly cost lies between US$ 450 and US$ 700, depending on size of the apartment, amount of living rooms, condition, etc.
Apartments near the college are about US$ 550 for two-bed room apartments that can be shared with another student. Apart from the rent, students will also be required to pay for electricity charges, heating, telephone, and there is usually a deposit.
