The College of the Desert in California was established in 1962, and offers students a large course selection. Students have the opportunity to receive an Associates degree after two years, or transfer to a four year American University, which leads to a Bachelors degree. The average class-size is 32 students, and in the Intensive English courses, 15. Students have the opportunity to participate in many extra-curricular activities, for example, in one of 14 different sport programs. The International Student Office assists foreign students with certain things, such as travel, living, culture, employment, and any personal problem. In addition, many events are planned, such as trips to Disneyland, Sea World and Los Angeles. Beach parties and camping are also scheduled.

College of the Deserts' campus lies directly on the outskirts of the Palm Springs recreation center in California, very near the San Jacinto Mountains. Los Angeles and San Diego are very easily accessible. Students here live in a wonderful area with panoramic views and a great climate. On campus, students have everything they might need, such as a book store, Theater One, and the Walter N. Marks Art Museum.

Palm Desert is a city in Coachella Valley in Riverside County in California with almost 50,000 inhabitants and a beautiful landscape. It is surrounded by three mountain ranges and has thus a convenient climate with 350 sunny days per year and average temperatures between 14 °C in January and 32 °C in July. One needs only two hours to Los Angeles and San Diego respectively and only 15 miles to Palm Springs where the Palm Springs National Airport is located.  Students interested in living outside of the campus area can contact the housing director. They will be very helpful in the search for accommodation that does not belong to the university. One should, however, apply early. The rent lies between US$ 700- US$ 800 for a one room, and between US$ 800- US$ 1000 for two rooms. Students must provide their own furnishings. Students may also look for apartments together.

Living with a host family is a great option for students wishing to experience culture and lifestyle firsthand, as well as improve language skills.
