City Profile Spokane
Spokane is with 200,000 inhabitants the second largest city in Washington 280 miles east of Seattle, 375 miles northeast of Portland and the capital of Spokane County. The Spokane River flows through the city and has some waterfalls in the city center. Spokane has held the World Exhibition Expo ´74 and that obviously changed its outer appearance: everything one could see of the old train industry in the inner city had to give way. The entire Expo area has now become the 40-hectare Riverfront Park, the United States pavilion houses an IMAX theater and the Washington State pavilion became the Inland Northwest Bank Performing Arts Center. All in all, there are 75 parks in the city that range from the one-hectare Skeet-So-Mish Park to the 186-hectare Palisades Park. Here is also a lot of culture offered, for example Spokane Symphony or Spokane Jazz Orchestra which is the United States´ oldest active jazz orchestra. Furthermore, many festivals are organized every year such as the Garland Village Arts & Music Festival or Pig-Out in the Park that celebrates the joy of food in summer and local restaurants have stands all over the Riverfront Park. The climate is continental and semiarid with mild winters and warm summers. The Cascade Mountains in the west protect the city from oceanic air and Idaho´s Mountains in the east keep Arctic air away in winter. Spokane´s inhabitants have the opportunity to use one of five ski areas around the city in winter.
